About Faithe

I am a semi retired teacher with 40 years teaching experience with a Masters degree in educational psychology with an endorsement in special education. Initially trained within the primary sector I also have teaching and management experience at all levels - my most recent in community education within the tertiary sector working with second chance adult learners. During this time I have also received research scholarships, been a guidance counsellor, and recently completed a certificate in teaching English to foreign students to enable me to teach English abroad in Marrakech at the start of August for VSA on a 2 week placement.

As an educator I have embraced this saying from the first day I decided to become a primary school teacher. Despite my tertiary qualifications I have found that my best tutors have always been my students and believe that they have as much to teach me as I do them when it comes to learning. With this thinking in mind I try to instill in my students a belief in themselves - that they CAN learn and CAN achieve anything they want if they are focused, set goals and are prepared to work hard. So, a focus on the development of meta cognitive skills is always foremost in my mind - learning how to learn, developing good study and thinking skills etc.

I believe in needs based assessment and learning and try to design lessons that are meaningful, timely and relevant to the aspirations and goals of learners themselves, drawing on their personal interests and lifelong learning experiences. I like to think I am able to do so in fun, creative and innovative ways as despite my length of time within the education sector, I myself still have an enquiring mind and still have much to learn and share.

I am able to utilize a variety of teaching methods depending on a learner’s age and learning experiences. When working with younger learners I tend to use a guided discovery approach with lots of activities that acknowledge the use of multiple intelligences that utilize games, songs, and lots of visual resources (digital or otherwise) . Having worked a lot with second chance adult learners whose initial learning was unsuccessful, I tend to use an experiential approach that draws on their personal life experiences and involve themes that are realistic and relevant to them in the present or future. This often involves the provision of scaffolded learning experiences that enable them to participate in modeling appropriate new learning/behaviours, individual or group practise, and teacher and self review.

Details

For adult learners requiring study support for tertiary study such as assignment preparation there would be an extra charge of $10 per paper to provide feedback. Otherwise, rate is the same for all learners regardless of age.
