About Joscelyn

I started off as a classical pianist with 10 years of training, and played piano for church when I was 10 years old for about 4 years. After that, my passion for the arts evolved into professional dance, from ballet and modern dance to ballroom and commercial hip hop. I became a professional dance teacher in Columbus, Ohio at "Inspiration to Movement" dance studio for about 6 years before I moved to Los Angeles in 2018. I lived there for about 3 years, where I was an intern for a music producer, while teaching dance to artists with disabilities. I began professional voice training there, where my coach's approach was primarily musical theater based. The entertainment industry in Hollywood did not align with my morals, so I moved back to Columbus, where I began training under a vocal coach who taught me the importance of intuitive singing. This was absolutely life-changing for me, and I quickly realized that this approach caused an exponential growth in my sound, technique, and confidence. I currently am a singer and musician at my church, and am continuing my journey as a professional singer with my personal vocal coach and goals of songwriting and performing.

About the lesson

Everyone's body is unique. I've learned this as a professional dance teacher to a wide variety of individuals, including those with disabilities. With singing, discovering your voice is a journey, not meant to be replicated or put in a box by solely focusing on rigorous technique. The body learns best in a relaxed state, and singing is highly connected to the mind and emotions, not just specific parts in the body such as the diaphragm, soft palate, etc. My job is to work with your body, and learn what are the best ways that YOUR body learns. This will not only help you see your strengths and hear your own sound without trying to replicate others, but will also cause efficient and effortless technique to follow. There is no "typical" lesson plan because everyone starts at their own level and pace. However, I generally start with breath because the breath is the root of the voice. From there, we build upon the foundations which include mouth mechanics (i.e. tongue placement and form), where we send the resonance, and dynamics. Learning is not linear, so there will be times of going backwards to uncover a blockage or a layer, but it all inevitably leads to the blossoming of the voice. These lessons are for any level. I currently do not focus on training in specific styles such as musical theater, rock, etc.
