About Mufan
My name is Mufan Li, and I have been playing the violin for 10 years. I have played in the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra for over 7 years and Youth Orchestra (highest level) for 2 years. I was named the winner of the WHS Concerto/Aria Competition (2026), Honorable Mention for WYSO's Philharmonic Concerto Competition (2024), and a Piercehill Performing Arts Scholarship Recipient. I also received honorable mention for the MSO Stars of Tomorrow Competition, allowing me to play alongside the Milwaukee Symphony as a section leader.
Additionally, I have performed in Bach Around the Clock twice, received Exemplary at Solo and Ensemble State, and I am a member of my school's Honors Chamber Ensemble. In my free time, I volunteer as an usher for Madison Bach Musicians as well, assisting hundreds of attendees during each concert.
This summer, I was selected as one of 12 students out of a competitive applicant pool for the Violin Institute at the UW–Madison Summer Music Clinic. I will also be performing in the WSMA State Honors Orchestra.
Beyond performance, I enjoy helping younger students grow in their confidence and musicianship. I have experience working with children through tutoring, volunteering, and leadership activities, which has taught me to be patient, encouraging, and adaptable to different learning styles. I believe that every student can succeed with the right guidance and consistent support.
As a teacher, my goal is to create a positive and motivating learning environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions, and building confidence. I focus on developing strong technical fundamentals while also fostering musical expression and a lifelong appreciation for music. Whether a student is just beginning violin or looking to strengthen their technique and performance skills, I am committed to helping them reach their goals and enjoy the learning process.

My teaching approach focuses on building strong fundamentals while fostering a genuine enjoyment of music. I tailor lessons to each student's age, experience level, and goals, creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes as they learn.
A typical lesson begins with scales and warm-up exercises to develop intonation, tone quality, bow control, rhythm, and finger dexterity. We then work on repertoire, focusing on proper posture, left-hand technique, shifting, vibrato, musical expression, dynamics, articulation, and sight-reading skills. I also teach students how to practice effectively on their own, breaking down challenging passages into manageable steps and developing productive practice habits.
I am patient, encouraging, and skilled at explaining concepts in ways that are easy for students to understand. Rather than simply teaching students how to play notes, I help them develop confidence, musicianship, and a strong technical foundation that will support their long-term growth.
My lessons are designed primarily for beginner and intermediate violin students, elementary to high school aged, but all age groups are welcome. Whether a student is just starting, preparing for orchestra auditions, working toward a solo performance, or looking to improve their overall technique, I can provide personalized instruction to help them reach their goals.
