About Kyrsten
I am a working scientist with several publications (You can find me online). I have a degree in Zoology and am working on a degree in Public Health. I use statistics frequently, but more importantly I STRUGGLED with the math in university. Since I am not a natural with math I have utilized many tutor services, learned what works and what doesn't, have an endless supply of patience (I've certainly required plenty of it myself) and am invested in the success of those I tutor.

Each individual faces different learning challenges that should be acknowledged and adapted to. However, my typical approach to tutoring is:
1) Determining what the student wants:
Are they struggling with a single concept OR a broad lack of understanding of the subject matter?
AND
What do they want to get out of tutoring? Passing the class/exam OR develop a deep working understanding of the topic?
2) Providing the appropriate resources for that goal:
Single concept: Practice questions, visuals, and games that explore the topic from different angles
Many concepts: Create a checklist of concepts required and testing each. Once the individual has gotten a concept question right 3 times - then they understand the concept. This allows us to focus on concepts an individual has trouble retaining AND will allow them to have a list of difficult concepts to go back to for final exams.
Passing: Focus on memory tricks and simple step-by-step processes to figure out correct answers.
Understanding: Socratic discussion that allows the individual to show their understanding of the concept deeply. Focus on the WHY.
