My methodology is to model NOT tell students how to do what I ask. I choose subjects to read and write that my students will enjoy and don't want to end, taking suggestions from them. The expectation is that my students and I dialog ... I'm not a lover of monologue. Students participate more when they have a stake in what's going on and enjoy it.
Although I taught for almost 30 years, I worked in various capacities throughout the district. One of my most rewarding was as a Literacy Coach where I reached thousands of students through reading and writing strategies. My reward came when the coaches were scoring writing and they shared that many of my students had achieved 3s and 4s in writing on a 1 to 4 scale. I felt that I was making a difference.
If I am given notice by a student that plans have changed, that is fine. I will always try to give them a week notice if I cannot make a session.
