About Gary Raymond

Dr. Fry is a native of Prince George's County and an alumnus of Prince George's Community College, graduating with an Associate of Arts in General Studies. Dr. Fry began his employment with Prince George's Community College in 1996 and has continued his employment since earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from the New York Institute of Technology through a hybrid program. He continued his studies at the New York Institute of Technology, earning a Master's in Communication Arts while pursuing the Theater and Entertainment Technology Certificate at Prince George's Community College. In 2022, Dr. Fry completed his Doctor of Philosophy in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus in the Humanities and Culture, and Social Justice, and a Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing through Union Institute and University in Cincinnati through their moderate residency program.

Demonstrating his interdisciplinary training, Dr. Fry began working as a theater technician in the Queen Anne Fine Arts Building at Prince George's Community College. In 1998, he was promoted to Supervisor of Theater Operations while also working as an adjunct for the College. In 2009, he chose to apply for a full-time faculty position at Prince George's Community College. He began teaching full-time in the Humanities in the Fall of 2010, teaching courses in Theater, Public Relations, and Communications.

Over the past 30 years, Dr. Fry has worked extensively in the regional/professional theater industry in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia region as a theatrical lighting designer, technical director, sound designer, master electrician, and producer. He has also directed several plays, which received reviews in the Washington Post and other periodicals, including the Washingtonian. Dr. Fry maintains memberships in several creative and performing arts organizations, including serving on the board of directors of many. Dr. Fry is now pleased to serve as Director of Humanities Student Programming for Prince George's Community College's Humanities Department, managing all student performing arts programs in the College's new Center for the Performing Arts.

About the lesson

My name is Gary Raymond Fry Jr., Ph.D., and I am a Maryland-based humanities scholar, creative writer, theatre educator, director, designer, and arts administrator. My interdisciplinary work bridges performance, philosophy, communication, and the literary arts. I am writing to present my professional and academic background for your consideration.
As a native of Prince George’s County, I began my education at Prince George’s Community College, where I earned an Associate of Arts in General Studies and a certificate in Theatre and Entertainment Technology. I later earned a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and a master’s degree in Communication Arts from the New York Institute of Technology. I subsequently completed a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies and an 18-credit Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing at Union Institute and University.
I approach theatre as more than entertainment. I view performance as a form of humanistic inquiry through which artists and audiences can examine identity, behavior, cultural values, ethical responsibility, and the complex relationships between individuals and their communities. This philosophy shapes my teaching and mentorship. I encourage emerging artists to understand creative practice as both disciplined craftsmanship and a meaningful process of self-discovery.
As a writer, I work primarily in creative nonfiction, poetry, dramatic writing, and cultural criticism. My writing investigates how individuals create meaning from lived experience and how language, narrative, and performance can give form to emotions and circumstances that resist easy expression. Recurring subjects in my work include identity, personal agency, anxiety, illness, healing, inclusion, self-acceptance, emotional intelligence, perfectionism, and the ethics of cultural representation. My prose often moves between memoir, philosophical reflection, scholarly inquiry, and the close examination of literature and popular culture.
My philosophical orientation is interdisciplinary and deeply humanistic. I am particularly interested in the relationship between creativity and selfhood—specifically, how imaginative activity enables people to question inherited assumptions, explore identity, exercise agency, and envision more compassionate and inclusive ways of living. In my cultural writing, I have examined role-playing and collaborative storytelling as spaces for originality, creative risk, self-examination, gender exploration, and resistance to cultural gatekeeping.
Across my creative, scholarly, theatrical, and educational work, I treat creativity as both an artistic act and a philosophical practice. It is a way of interrogating the self, challenging restrictive social narratives, building empathy, and transforming private experience into shared understanding. My career reflects a sustained commitment to interdisciplinary learning, artistic expression, student development, and the belief that stories can help individuals and communities imagine more humane possibilities.
