About Karie
I am passionate about teaching writing. I have a bachelors in English with a minor in sociology and an MFA in nonfiction writing. In undergrad, I worked at our writing center as a consultant for two years. There, I worked with students of all majors and backgrounds, including ESL learners. As a graduate student, I taught Writing 121 and Intro to Creative Nonfiction Writing to as many as 23 students at a time. During both my undergraduate and graduate careers, I worked as an editor for various organizations and have a total of 5 years experience copy and content editing.

I believe every student is presented with unique challenges and feel it is important to structure tutoring around each student's special needs. I also believe that the key to becoming a better writer is practicing writing and reading as much as possible. A great place to begin is by writing topics that interest the writer and reading books they enjoy, rather than being forced to read and write about particular topics. My approach is less focused on mechanical issues (unless that is the student's main concern), and more focused on addressing issues with deep structure, content, and research.
