About Amber

Hi, Nice to meet you! I'm Amber, a 2nd year UNSW Commerce and Comp Sci student and Ex-Macleans Alumni. I've been tutoring since 2023 in year 11 with 350+ hours of experience in 1:1 and group tutoring. My past students ranged from primary to intermediate level, second language speakers and AS Cambridge English language.

With my unique teaching system all my students have seen long-term improvement in core English abilities including writing, vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, and general knowledge. This improves not only exam scores but gives a strong foundation to all other subjects e.g., writing an experiment for science, university/high school assignments, interpreting exam papers, knowledge about the world, etc.

Additionally from my own personal experience of going to 3 different high schools studying NCEA, IB, CIE and being part of many extracurriculars and holding executive positions I can give university and school life advice to my students.

In High School I studied Cambridge CIE doing Math, Economics, Business, History, English Language and some notable marks are
-93% AS Math raw mark
-A in A2 Economics
-90% in AS English Language
-88% AS Business

Some of my academic achievements are
-NZQA Geography Scholarship
-World Economics cup-National Top 10+Gold Medalist and Asia thinking and innovation challenge top 10
-NZ Economics competition High Distinction
-NZ Secondary Schools Case Competition 2021 junior division winner
-Young Enterprise Scheme participant 2021

Each lesson will be tailored to what you/your child wishes to work on.
Common things include writing, grammar, comprehension, vocabulary, and spelling.
1. We start our lesson by reviewing the previous week's writing homework that students work on throughout the week. This includes which sections can be improved, how to improve, new ideas to research and include, and corrections on spelling, grammar, and structure.
2. Next, we move onto the week's reading, I choose texts from a variety of writing styles including articles, news reports, autobiography, advertisement, infographic, speech, etc. on various topics e.g., technology, education, environment, traveling, science... This ensures students not only develop their English abilities but also become more knowledgeable about the world, which helps with reading comprehension and writing in more depth.
3. During this reading, I work with students to identify the structure i.e., the flow of the author's ideas and main points, the text type i.e., what are the conventions e.g., news reports have an inverse triangle structure and the language techniques and why the author uses them. My goal is for students to understand from a writer's point of view so they can apply these language and techniques to their own writing.
During this part for students wanting to work on vocabulary, I will highlight all unknown words which students will learn and spell over the week and be tested on the next lesson. For spelling, students will not just memorize the word but know how to use it in different tenses and sentences.
4. After reading an example text type e.g., news report students will start to draft and write their own version on a subject I specifically pick so students can independently research and gain more insights on. This will then be completed for homework.
The more advanced activity once students have worked through all text types and are confident in writing in every format, we will start learning how to write analytical paragraphs, picking out language techniques, explaining why the author uses them, and what effects they have on the reader. To further push a student to develop analytical thinking abilities.
5. At the end of each lesson homework will be set for students to do. This can include comprehension questions from the reading in the lesson, writing homework, spelling practice, or analytical paragraphs.
Using this system my students have improved dramatically with no extra outside tutoring or need to buy any English workbooks.

I can also tutor specifically for AS English where I will make sure each student understands the genres and text types that can be asked in the exam. I will then ask students to write many practice essays and provide feedback and improvement helping with their analytical skills and writing abilities.
