About Yianni

I have been giving lessons since 2015 and taught one to one & group of 3 students. Most of my students got Bachelor Degree in Architecture, Interior Design and Urban Design and Masters Degrees in Architecture and Urban Design from multi awarded London and European Universities.

About the lesson

Member of RIBA & ARB. I have worked professionally for 15 years in Architecture and Urban design for Projects in Europe, Asia, Middle East and Africa. My role was on designing, meeting with clients, create project briefs and meet deadlines. Since 2015 I have been giving private lessons to Undergraduate & postgraduate students covering all their modules, essays and design projects. Each module/project is analytically approached, structured and fulfilment of all requirements. The aim is to support the realisation of student's innovative ideas, communicate with them and help giving their best of themselves providing them with the strength and confidence which will follow them beyond University at their professional career. Bespoke Methodology, strong communication, innovation and passion are the tools I use in order every student to be successful! Architecture and Urban Design is ART & SCIENCE together. Perfect! Yiannis always tries to understand my vision and helps me bring it to life. His approach towards my project helped me understand what studying architecture really is about and I have never enjoyed it more since then. Our lessons are so fun that it's seems as it's not even lesson. What sets them apart is his ability to explain complex ideas clearly while encouraging independent thinking and creativity. He is so patient and brings his passion in every one of our lessons. I genuinely cannot recommend him highly enough!

Tibor is a student not from architectural background. He has a BA in Forestry but he is wiling to be accepted into a MA in Landscape Design. I do enjoy the lessons with him a lot as we are now working on making a portfolio for his MA entry.

When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
The interest in architecture, spaces and buildings I had developed since a very early age. I remember during school excursions in local parks, while other kids were playing ball games I instead found myself collecting stones from the fields around and creating house plans on the ground inspired from houses I have visited or lived in. The sense of scale was always so important for me.

Now developing interest for private tutoring aroused mainly from two facts.

The first was when being an undergraduate student, a visiting professor came to Uni and gave a lecture which enchanted me with his method of transmitting knowledge. That clicked on me that one day I would love to do the same.

The second fact is that during my professional career I have attended several project meetings with people from a diverse cultural and professional backgrounds. The smooth outcome and the positive feedback I had from those people encouraged me to understand that I have a high ability to communicate ideas and solve problems both within teams and individuals. Strong communication skills are essential in private tutoring.
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
Architecture thankfully is a very vast field which covers most aspects of life. Beyond teaching the fundamentals of form, space, scale and drawing techniques I love discussing with my students social, cultural, natural and philosophical subjects which matter in our lives and we can draw inspiration to further develop our profession based on human needs and diversity.
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
Even if I drew my inspiration from several factors , my role model have been two world famous architects and urbanists. The Italian Renzo Piano for his ability to make projects that are very site specific and respect the natural climate and topography & the Danish Jan Gehl for his theories on urban design based very much on humanscale factors and relationships.
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Firstly, the love of transmitting knowledge is essential. Being a good listener and having great communication skills also go together.

The teaching methodology should be adaptable and be based on the student character and needs. Having a vision on how things can become is fundamental & having passion and patience is a must!

Finally bringing out the best in a student is my ultimate goal!

I was always a dreamer with a high sense of auto-sarcasm that sometimes even my teachers used to tease me for that!
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
Architecture initiated thousands of years ago since humans had the need of shelter from the natural elements. Today is far more than that, it reflects the challenges of our own existence on a planet which suffers from climate change and bad use of resources. Sustainability issues and co-living with nature are the challenges we are facing and called to resolve as ethically correct architects of the future.
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
People who have known me for years would say travelling is my biggest passion. The need and curiosity of discovering places, cultures and diversity is what drives me through life and still being the primal source of inspiration for my profession.
