I assess a child's level in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in Spanish. Then I develop the plan of study based on a child's needs and current level. I like to get children motivated during the class by centering topics of conversation and study around things that interest them. I also like to keep the class light and fun though I do expect children to spend time learning vocabulary, sentence patterns for writing, etc. Homework will be given based on parental advice. If homework is wanted by the parents, I assign relevant homework including reading and writing tasks when appropriate. If parents prefer all the work to be done during class time, we work on things together in class though the children would be expected to do the work and not simply let me do it for them. I believe that every child can learn. Perhaps not all at the same speed, but they can all learn and move forward at their own pace.
I am an English Teacher, but I love Spanish and have studied Spanish since high school and undergraduate studies. I have lived in 4 Spanish speaking countries for over 6 years total, and I have taught a class of bilingual 1st-grade students at a US-based school, too! I have Texas teacher certification for teaching Spanish grades 1-12 though I have never really taught Spanish as a school subject in school. I have, however, taught Spanish to children online and privately during my 15 years in Thailand and 9 years in China. I look forward to teaching your child the Spanish language and if they happen to need a bit of help in English, I can do that, too! Often when children study a foreign language, they also learn quite a bit about their own first language.
In high school and university for undergraduate work, I studied Spanish for a total of 7 years. I also attended a summer school Spanish immersion course in Cuernavaca, Mexico during my university years. Following graduation, I lived in Costa Rica for 3 months of training for Peace Corps service in Ecuador. Then it was my joy to serve in the Peace Corps in Ecuador where I training local farms in ag practices as well as taught English to the local children and youth. Following the Peace Corps, I taught English and was a Homeschool Teacher in Guatemala for 5 years in which I utilized Spanish daily. Then while working and teaching English in Thailand and China for over 20 years, I taught sometimes taught Spanish to some of the local children and youth for fun. It was very rewarding. I also have Texas teacher certification in teaching Spanish K-12 since 2011.
Christie and I have been friends since childhood! She's patient, dedicated to any task that she takes on. In addition to being an educator most of her adult life, she comes from a large family, so she's been teaching all her faith-filled life.
I have known Miss Nelson since 2011 when she was a teacher at the same school where I worked. The school was BCIS (Buena Vista Concordia International School). Miss Nelson is so kind, thoughtful, quick-thinking, and patient. She is very passionate about teaching and helping children improve their English skills. Her methods are so innovative and creative based on her more than 20 years teaching experience. Every child loves Miss Nelson as do their parents. Fellow teachers and staff relied on her for advice on how to teach English to their Chinese students, too. She was a great asset to the school. Additionally, she put a lot time to research the methods for teaching dyslexic children. In addition to teaching regular learners of English, she has taught many dyslexic children how to read and spell using a modified USA OG program for dyslexic learners. Because of her assistance, those Chinese dyslexic children who stayed with Miss Nelson long-term advanced their reading and writing skills immensely and now read at or above their grade levels. Miss Nelson teaches phonemic awareness, pronunciation, phonics, writing sentences using basic sentence patterns, writing essays of various kinds, the 6 traits of writing, reading comprehension, reading fluency, and reading accuracy. She also teaches spelling, grammar, mechanics of writing, vocabulary acquisition, and Greek and Latin roots.
You will have no other teacher who will care so much for you, and At the same time you will have to work hard under her guidance. And you will be successful and surprise yourself. Christie Nelson worked with me for two years when I was Head of School and these results happened over and over again.
