About Christina

I have a total of nine years experience teaching math. I have taught 4th - 7th grade including 6th and 7th grade Honors math. The last five years I have tutored both former students of mine as well as students I never taught but someone had recommended them to me! I have had great success with both my students that I have taught in my classroom as well as the students I have tutored on the side. My absolute FAVORITE part about tutoring on the side is witnessing the student's confidence rise week to week as their grades are improving and they are beginning to understand math more than they ever have in the past! I received my bachelors in education with a minor in mathematics in 2009 and I also received my masters in school counseling in 2013. Although I have no intention of leaving math anytime soon, I figured I would at least get my masters while I had the time to do it before I thought of having kids myself! :)

It is important to me that my lessons are mostly student-centered learning as opposed to a direct-teaching/lecture-style lesson. Research (and test scores) show that this old way of teaching, that most of us all learned by in the past, is just not working anymore. Sadly, many teachers are hesitant to change their teaching styles and unfortunately the students are suffering. I completely believe, and have seen first-handedly, that it is more beneficial in truly learning and grasping the material if the students take ownership of their learning rather than having me teach them with a direct lecture.

I base my classes on what my students need in order to be successful in mastering the objective I am teaching for the day. I also base my classes on what interest the students. Whether it is a certain gaming system, store they buy clothes at, or even the new messaging app "#groupme," there are ALWAYS ways to tie math concepts to everyday things that the students already love in order to make the math objective more interesting, but also easier as it is being applied to something they are already interested in. I really get to learn my student's learning style, and will learn to mold each lesson based on what I believe will be more beneficial to that particular class in the end. I also develop a strong relationship with my students and rely on them to be open with me in terms of each lesson and what helped/didn't help them grasp the concept in order to help me change up the next lesson if needed.

I approach each topic by relating it to real life. An example I just used was asking them for help in picking a cell phone plan. I gave them the two options I was given, we talked it out, and they had no idea they were actually discussing and essentially understanding the concept of slope. I am passionate about relating every topic we cover to something the students are very familiar with. I believe we are setting the students up for struggle if they can not relate or picture what the math we are doing actually means when applying it to a real life situation.
