About Paul
Hello,
My name's Paul. I am offering online ESOL tutoring for all ages, levels and backgrounds.
I have over 9 years of English teaching experience, working in higher education, language schools, community settings, a refugee camp, tutoring and running workshops.
I grew up and was educated in the UK; I have lived in France for 9 years. I have helped many students successfully achieve their educational goals: entrance exams, GCSEs, A Levels, university assessments.
I worked as a lecturer at the University Grenoble-Alpes (UGA), France, where I taught English language courses for postgraduate and undergraduate students across a range of subjects.
I specialise in film studies, the arts and ESOL. I hold a MA with distinction in film studies from Goldsmiths, University of London. I also specialise in urban planning and architectural language. I am working towards a Royal Town Planning Institute-accredited planning qualification at the University of Manchester.
My BA in French and German from UCL developed my understanding of language and translation skills. I have worked as a translator (French into English) specialising in film and architecture. I apply my TESL Canada and the CELTA training in our lessons.
I draw on my knowledge of other languages in our lessons too. I speak French, German and some Brazilian Portuguese and have knowledge of Russian, Irish and Welsh.
I'd love to hear from you. I offer an initial meeting, so that we can talk more about your goals.
See you soon!

First, we'll talk through you and your goals. Do you want to learn English for school, work or pleasure? Are you looking for after-school help for your child? Maybe you're a beginner or rusty, feeling nervous about (re)starting your English learning. Or are you a C1 learner, looking for more advanced support?
We all have diverse learning needs and stories. Our initial meeting will give us the opportunity to discuss your learning needs.
Our lessons will work as a creative space. My background in the arts helps us to play with the language effectively and with focus. Art resources, like drawing, painting and collage, are excellent resources for language learning and are a part of my method, as well as creative writing techniques.
For more advanced learners, I specialise in language for film studies, the arts and spatial planning/architecture. My experience as a university lecturer can orientate the academic direction of our lesson and provide a more advanced level of support.
My most important goal for our lessons is that you grow more confident communicating in English. We might spend only one hour per week together, so you or your child's confidence outside of our class really matters. To that end, we'll focus on a specific part of the language - a theme, structure or context, depending on your level and interests. We'll practise speaking, writing, reading and listening skills in this area. Drawing on my ESOL (English as a second language) training, I'll prioritise your voice. You putting the language to use is key.
We meet online with clear visuals and sound.

Paul and I had the pleasure of working together at the University of Grenoble. He was a wonderful colleague that was very appreciated by his students. His passion and curiosity always led him to shape interesting course content that aligned well with the needs of his students. I highly recommend him as a tutor!
Paul is kind, patient and incredibly well read. He has years of experience sharing his passion for subjects such languages, literature, politics and film with people from all backgrounds and of all ages. A curious and avid learner himself, he can always provide innumerable sources for further learning and brings positive energy to all discussions.
Paul is very thoughtful and patient, making him a great tutor who really listens to students. He brings an enthusiasm to everything he does which encourages others to try their best and makes them feel supported. He is conscientious and reliable.
Paul and I worked together as English teachers in France, working with a diverse group of students including adults and teenagers. Paul is a very present and attentive teacher. He is able to challenge both advanced students as well as meeting the needs of those who need a bit of extra support and patience. Paul is also fun and creative and enjoys to bring his interest in film, art and music in to the classroom. I therefore highly recommend Paul as an English tutor to everyone wanting to learn or improve their English language.
I have known Paul for 10 years, dating back to when we were both students of Academic Writing and Reading at the Media and Communications Department, Goldsmiths, University of London. Paul is a highly trained and reliable language instructor with a strong background in media and culture. His extensive knowledge of European history and the arts is second to none, enhanced by his lived experience in France, Germany, the US, and Brazil. Students with a particular interest in grammar and language structure, combined with an in-depth understanding of history and contemporary issues, will greatly benefit from having him as a language teacher.
