About Jan Lars
Hello bright, capable learners!
My name is Jan ('yon') and one of the things I enjoy more than anything else in the whole world is helping people discover and connect with their individual, and sometimes previously unknown, strengths. In school, but also in sports, other things, and life in general.
I've taught math, social studies, science, writing, and a few other subjects too. I've coached debate, soccer, track, basketball, and my all-time favorite, ultimate frisbee.
I've been an educator and trainer in one form or another for 20+ years. I've taught at the university, community college, high school, and middle school levels. I also spent many years developing education and training programs for nonprofit organizations.
But most of all, I'm interested in helping YOU.....to connect with your strengths and strategize how to overcome challenges or reach new heights. Believe it or not, it's usually not about so-called "ability" or "intelligence" (a lot of misconceptions around those words). It's about strategies, attitude, and how one approaches things.
Let's talk, and see if together we can get you on track to where you want to go.

My lessons and approach are primarily TASK-based. I present a question or problem and together we STRATEGIZE about it. Creatively exploring the concepts and meaning that underlies the math is the key to long-term success and greater confidence in math and related problem-solving.
I have taught everything from basic number sense to advanced algebra, and I enjoy working with students from grades 4-12, but I particularly specialize in working with students in grades 5-9 which is a particularly pivotal stage in developing one's math brain.
