I used various techniques ranging from scaffolding, 80/20, teacher talk to warm language. Most of my student are at the basic level of English speaking. That is why I prefer to breakdown the lesson up to the simplest understandable form. I enhance that by incorporating “teacher talk” such as repetition. Repetition helps on emphasizing the concepts that are important. I also avoid use of jargons in order to allow the lesson to penetrate. I give them more time to practice than I do take to teach. I have to stimulate them to remember the previous lesson because some of them are adults and they go to than work and have responsibilities at home and they really tend to forget a lot. So I spend 5 hours with them in a week but I only use about 1.5 hrs a week in lecturing and the 3.5 hours is used for practicing the language.
This 3.5 hours include warm-ups whereby they’re divided in groups and interact based on the previous lessons and also on the lesson that they’re going to learn. During these activities, I motivate every student by giving them monthly movies tickets, others get gifts such as novels and meal vouchers. The activities includes asking them questions and also allowing each one of the groups to formulate questions to be asked among peers. The questions I ask are usually answered as guided practice. I write on the board and we work altogether. My student are assessed when they present on a topic of their choice every end of the week, this is usually a formative assessment and they have 2 summative assessment every month. Also bear in mind that some of the questions asked during warm up and topic introduction count towards the final mark.
