About Murphy

"Teacher Murphy, what qualifications do you have?"

Good question, incoming student! I have a Bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas in the U.S. There I studied sociology and American studies. American studies involves an investigation of the political and social role of the United States throughout the world, especially during the 20th century. Therefore, our conversations about the US will be a bit different from other classes you may have with fellow English teacher from the US. In addition, I have the TEFL certificate that I completed in September 2019 in Madrid. As said above, I have more than four years of teaching. In addition, I have been studying Spanish for six years, so we will easily correct translations and false friends. I have worked with children in many places and I include imaginative games in children's classes to encourage a mix of fun and learning. But don't worry, adults! I always offer fun with normal studies if you're interested in a more playful learning experience.

"Teacher Murphy, I want to know more about your experience as a teacher. Who have you taught? Why do you teach English? Why should I be your student?"

You're so curious, future student! I appreciate that you want to know more. I have more than four years teaching in various positions as a teacher, and in Madrid I have been teaching for a year. I have been a teacher in the following capacities: general education tutor to incarcerated youth, assistant to disabled students in high school, facilitator of social justice education to teaching staff at universities, online English teacher for children under 12 and in person English as a second language teacher at two academies in Madrid. I want to teach English because I value increased language participation in our world that communicates in hundreds of languages. I want to improve your ability to do exactly that, of course! I am from the United States, and of all the languages spoken there, Spanish is the second most spoken languag. So teaching English makes much sense considering my previous experience while I continue learning Spanish.

I think you should want to be a student of mine for several reasons: I have patience for all levels of English. I am kind in my method of improving your skills. I offer thorough editing of any essay you write, as details are of the utmost importannce in English. My editing style always includes grammar corrections and suggestions for common English phrases. To understand grammar and express original thoughts we have to practice well during class and outside of class. I want to provide these skills because languages evolve over time. As your teacher, I will fill you in on the changes and evolutions of English that are not found in any textbook.

As a student of mine, you will learn American English, my first tongue, focusing on individual topics and interests while learning at your personal pace. The classes contain monthly study plans that I personally create and share with you along with updates on your progress. We know that learning another language takes time, repetition, and adaptation ... And sometimes, it puts pressure on us. But! In my classes we do this process in a simple and fun way to progress to higher levels of English. This is what I will offer you in class, future student.

"But Prof Murphy... I've been learning English for 3,000 years already! How could an English base focus benefit me?"

Excellent question, soon-to-be student. We will start by strengthening what you already know. There are four elementary methods of learning any language: listening, speaking, writing, and reading. In our first classes, I will give you exercises and materials that I have prepared for each of the methods. Through this, we can establish your personal pace. These materials will give me understanding of your needs as a student. I will take note of your needs and adapt our classes accordingly!

Your class exercises will include:
• English tongue training at the beginning of class, as a warm up.
• Review of assignments from the last class (speaking and reading)
• Writing down, saying, and working with new material (speaking, reading, listening)
• Saying examples of the new material by yourself (speaking)
• Listening to the correction of your pronunciation (speaking and listening)
• Taking notes of your assignments outside of class (listening, reading, writing)

Your assignments outside of class will include:
• Essays (writing)
• Listening and reading podcasts, articles, TED Talks, music, and more according to your level as a student. They are all of American origin and it will give you more understanding about my country (listening, reading)
• Write down and review what you will continue to learn in class (writing, reading)

"Professor Murphy, what makes you different from other teachers?"

I'm glad you've asked! I have three English language specialties that distinguish me from most of the English teachers in Madrid.
• LGBTQ+ / queer culture - If you are interested in learning the first language English ways to say anything queer, then we will fit well together as a teacher and a student.
• Social justice - Do you want to discourse? Do you want to get on Twitter conversations while the rapid news from US elections keep rolling in? Do you want to understand the differences between the right and the left American politics, and the unique differences within "the right" or within "the left" themselves? Let me know.
• General mental health - I have worked in social support groups that served people living with mental health disorders. I already use the terminology that humanizes those populations. The language that I use always has humanization at the center of describing anyone. (I'm not a doctor. I have the language of mental health to offer. I can't offer you professional support. To be clear.)
