About Luke
I started giving English classes in 2012, when I worked for Woodbrook Summer Language Academy. I was working with this company in 2012 and 2013. My students were teenagers, and came from various places. I had between 6-8 students in my class. They were of a basic level. During the summer of 2014, I worked for a similar business in Dublin, called Atlantic Language School. This summer I decided to improve my teaching skills, and so I did a CELTA is International House, Dublin. This is a Cambridge University diploma which is recognized throughout the world. During the diploma I taught adults with an advanced level. I had between 8-14 students in my class. The students were learning English for various reasons (trade, travel, etc.) Thanks to my help, my students received certificates from their language school (Woodbrook Summer Language Academy, Atlantic Language School International House). Some pupils at International House were preparing for English exams (TOEIC, TOEFL).

My name is Luke FitzHerbert, and I am twenty-three years old. I just finished my studies at Trinity College Dublin, where I studied history. I am also interested in languages, I speak French, but not fluently. My English lessons are for any level of English, and any age. I have experience with children of an elementary level, and also with adults, of varying levels. I can help people prepare for English exams (TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS or other), to work, students who go on Erasmus, or for whatever reason people want to improve. My technique and teaching method will depend on the individual needs of my students. So first, I establish why the student wants to learn English. Will they move to an English-speaking country? For business purposes? To read English novels or watch movies? And then determine the level of the student, with a small test. This information will give me an idea of how I teach, what textbooks I should buy, whether I focus on receptive skills, such as reading and listening comprehension, or productive skills, writing and conversational skills. Additionally I place a high importance on teaching English in the way that English speakers use their language in everyday scenarios. So you have to know the most common words, understand the working of contemporary grammar, not the century before! The sounds of words when they are said in conversation is very important and so I always teach phonetics. If the student does not know the phonetic alphabet, I'll teach them. Normally classes are an hour, or two, and I teach English in English. There is always some grammar exercises - verb tenses, prepositions, etc. with exercises for receptive and productive skills. I often use a textbook but I also like real life materials such as newspapers or books. In each class there is an aim of the class, for example: vocabulary for the weather (rain, sun, thunder) or occasions when we use the future simple instead of the present progressive. (I will go to the shop instead of I'm going to the shop), or to have a conversation with student of considerable length, on a topic which the student is interested in. I also spend some time correcting, so that the student can understand their mistakes. If the student has enough free time, I'll give them homework, and we will correct it together at the start of the next course. For example, I ask that the student keeps a little notebook in which they writes a sentence for each word he learned in our last class, and I ask that the student reads a chapter from an English novel of their choice and write a short summary.
