About Michaela

I used to teach ESL in undergraduate public schools (K-6) (for 17 years in the US and more than 10 in Europe) while also teaching at college level (credit/non-credit classes and adult education (over 20 years).

Currently, I teach credit ESL classes--Listening/ Speaking, Reading, and Writing--at a community college in my area; I can say that, according to student feedback, I have meaningfully impacted my students' goals in learning English, as well as their linguistic, cultural, and social journey they embarked on when choosing to study English and improve their English skills.

Most of my students have exited the ESL program with flying colors in less than two years. Many have become leaders in the college community, while others are also quite successful in their area of study in regular English programs. My ex-students' feedback keep me in touch with their new endeavors, as they love to share their success stories with me. I love to listen to their stories and support whenever they need me.

About the lesson

Teaching ESL is my way of giving back to the community of international students, as once my sons were. My sons and I had walked in ESL "shoes' some time ago, so I know and understand first hand international/ESL students' needs, worries, and dreams. That is why I want to to be of service and share my extended experience with people that want to better their English skills.

My method of instruction is based on developing student motivation and active engagement in the process of learning, so that students can take ownership of their own learning at their individual pace and according to their learning particularities.
Student suggestions are encouraged and supported in the common effort of increasing student critical thinking (at higher level thinking skills), self-confidence, and initiatives in self-expression in English. Therefore, a constant student-teacher interaction based on student needs and questions will be at the basis of the lesson structure; the lessons would consequently be flexible and adaptable according to student input and needs.

I am an educator that is also a life-long learner and ready to enrich my experience and knowledge as well. I believe that being an ESL teacher is the most fascinating profession as it enables me to touch the world, which enriches my life tremendously. Having the chance to successfully teach both in the USA and Europe makes me believe that I would make a great learning-teaching partner to any student in the world. I am enthusiastically dedicated to my profession and the students I teach!
