About Malikar

My name is Raj and I have been training dogs for over 25 years.

I am a strong advocate of responsible dog keeping, of which training is an inseparable part. Just take a look around, and you will see what a nuisance badly managed dogs can be in a community. Often times the fault lies not so much with the dogs as with their owners, who are not aware of, or do not fulfill the responsibilities that go with dog ownership. They may not even be aware of a problem until it becomes a nuisance.

My aim is to create a better understanding among dogs, dog lovers and the community, so that all can live in harmony with one another. And for that my friend, its important that you understand the art and craft of communicating with your dog.

About the lesson

Dos and Don'ts of having a dog

a) Treat your dog like a member of your family.
b) Keep his bed/bedding near your living space.
c) Feed the dog a standard diet .
d) Feeding time of your dog must be fixed – plus/minus 15 minutes. The dog must be fed before the
family has meals.
e) Do not feed the dog at the dining table when the family sits down to have meals.
f) No training or exertion immediately before or after meals.
g) Training to be done by someone the dog loves most.
h) Total training time never to exceed 30 minutes.
i) Success in training depends on patience, perseverance and firmness. Anger and aggression are to be
always avoided.
j) Dog young or old is not to be trusted with children till the dog has learnt to like children to the
extent that he comes to them on his own and licks them.
k) Brush the dog once every day.
l) The best way to break a dogfight is to throw water on the faces fighting dogs, from a safe distance.

When the puppy is four months old s/he is introduced to a formal training programme. The programmes cover the following aspects:

i) House training
ii) Obedience training
iii) Retrieving
iv) Guarding

This programme for training dogs is helpful for existing dog owners, as well as those planning to acquire a new dog.
