I am privileged to write a letter of recommendation for Mr. James McManus who worked as a Social Studies teacher at Powhatan High School between 2005 and 2021. Mr. McManus has a great rapport with students, easily connects with coworkers, and adds his energy and optimism to teaching. Mr. McManus has left me with a very deep impression of his zeal, integrity, intelligence, and penetrating comprehension of history.
Mr. McManus is a creative and flexible educator. He is a good role model for children and other teachers. Advanced knowledge of history will help him to prepare students for challenges of higher education and adult life. Mr. McManus is a very versatile educator: he has taught Dual Enrollment US History in addition to regular, honors, and collaborative courses in this subject along with World History I and US Government courses. Mr. McManus displays at all times exemplary behavior, he is able to work effectively with both students and coworkers, and brings a positive attitude and ability to adapt to any challenge he faces.

Mr. McManus was my history teacher in high school and I couldn’t recommend him enough. He is a wonderful teacher. I personally struggled with history more than any other subject and tended to just get by in previous history courses. However, with McManus as my teacher I excelled well in his class. He is a supportive, kind, and patient educator who also knows how to keep schoolwork light and fun! He is there to lend a hand in any subject or any assignment to help in any way he can. He is dedicated and he cares about his students.

I was Department Head at John Marshall High School and had the pleasure of working with Mr McManus for one year. I knew that Mr. MaManus was special within minutes of observing him teach. He was an outstanding teacher with a passion for history (and music:) and a dedication to his students. His knowledge of his content area was impressive. His ability to connect with all of his students and create a positive learning environment resulted in his student's significant growth and achievement. Mr. McManus's students loved him and it was a sad day when he left. He was remembered fondly and with admiration for years by his students, colleagues, and administration. We were fortunate to have him teach in RPS. I have followed him for quite a few years and am in awe of his growth, insight, and continued ability to bring out the best in his students. James is an amazingly flexible individual able to combine his innate brilliance with an intuitive sense of where the student is intellectually and how to employ the methods of instruction best suited for the type of learner. I entrusted my son to him and would love for him to teach my grandchildren. Of the many teachers supervised over a twenty year career at the university level I would characterize James as in the top 5% range in terms of commitment, aptitude and ability to employ his gifts in teaching.
