About Betty
I have taught at the University of Kansas, and for the past nine years I have been an online college English composition evaluator for Straighterline University. Since November 2023, I have also been an online writing tutor for Upswing. I also served for a year and a half as an assistant teacher in an English as a Second Language program. In addition to that, for three years I was a remedial English/writing center tutor. I have graded over 16,000 essays, and as such, I have a good understanding of what professors are looking for.

I believe all students have gifts and talents, and it is important to approach teaching from a strengths-focused perspective. I aim to provide a safe space free from judgment, where we work together to help you gain the tools and knowledge needed to succeed.
I typically work with adult professionals, college students, and high schoolers. I believe in being student-centered. Our work and my feedback will be based your needs. First, we will focus on higher order concerns such as: developing a strong thesis statement, constructing convincing arguments backed by credible supporting evidence, and developing a sound organizational structure with an introduction, a conclusion, topic sentences, and well-developed paragraphs. Then we move into lower order concerns such as grammar and punctuation. I have a number of links I provide to help you understand the mechanics or writing.
