About Jennifer

Teaching English as a second language has been my passion ever since living abroad myself. I helped out in the English classes taught at my boarding school and I was surprised by how much useless grammar and vocabulary they were required to learn. What's the point of learning words that natives don't use?

I received my CELTA teaching certificate the same year I graduated with a BA in Humanities and World Religions in 2001. The Humanities are about art, architecture, history, drama, literature, plays and poetry as well as music. The World Religions aspect helps me understand my students' culture better. I've worked with Muslims, Christians, Jews, Atheists, Agnostics, Buddhists, and those who don't want to talk about their religion. It's all okay with me.

What do my students consistently say about me? Here are some examples -

She is great at teaching, well organized and extremely polite. She is very attentive to what and how I say or write, kindly correcting me when necessary and giving a handful of useful tips on how to sound right and more natural while speaking American version of English. At the same time Jennifer is an easy-going and sociable person who can find a right approach to a student.

She is an attentive, warmhearted and extremely devoted and passionate teacher. Jennifer cares a lot about her students and she makes everything for them to achieve their goals. If you want to learn or work on your English, she is the right person to ask.

About the lesson

Learning a language takes time and dedication. I focus my lessons around real conversation with professionals. That means you'll be learning common phrases and then practicing them with me.

As every student is different, each lesson plan is different. Usually I start the lesson with small talk as this is a very useful skill. Then I go over any homework you may have completed. This can include a writing assignment of any sort, but typically student's write an essay or business letter. From your homework I'll be able to see where you need more help and then focus on correcting any grammar and/or spelling issues.

Next we'll go over new conversational phrases and possibly some grammar. In subsequent lessons, I'll test you on new vocabulary by writing a quiz especially designed for you.
My goal is to help you learn and quizzes help me to discover what I need to go over again.

Most, but not all, students need help with pronunciation. The two 'TH' sounds are difficult for a lot of students as well as several other sounds. I'll not only go over the correct pronunciation of each word, but I'll also teach you how to modulate your voice to sound more like a native speaker.

During every lesson I share my screen and type out almost everything we discuss. At the end of the lesson, I'll send you a copy of my notes. This way you won't have to takes notes during the lesson if you don't want to.

A bit about me: I've been working with non-native speakers of English for over 20 years. Primarily I work with professionals, but I have also worked with housewives and students. I love teaching!

I've lived in three different US states - California, Oregon and Colorado and two other countries - Finland and Germany. I have traveled extensively throughout much of Europe and I have studied many languages. I know from personal experience what it takes to learn a new language.
