About Ilaria

My name is Ilaria Manenti and I am a college student hoping to pursue a career as a secondary school teacher. I first became intrigued by the thought of becoming a teacher while watching my older sister walk through that path and witnessing all the joys and challenges that come with a career as an educator. Nonetheless, I did not fully realise teaching was in my destiny until I became a mentor for the junior debating society of my school, passing down one of my great passions to the younger pupils. During each meeting with the students, I had the opportunity to get some insight into what the career of an educator would be like, as many of the practical tasks I undertook were similar to those of a teacher i.e. explaining the structure of a debating speech, organising my school’s first junior Christmas debate, helping students decide points for a motion and suggesting ways in which they could improve their speech and their public speaking skills. Most importantly, it gave me a chance to experience the human side of teaching. I always worked towards building a trusting relationship between me and the students, making sure they felt comfortable with the other members and myself, and enhancing their self-confidence by allowing to express their opinion freely, yet in a respectful manner. It was then that I understood I was meant to be a teacher

About the lesson

I have previous experience tutoring Junior Cycle students in a variety of subjects (mathematics, English, Italian and Spanish). During my first tutoring job, I helped a student who was failing a number of subjects achieve a 70% in her state examinations by breaking down notions into manageable pieces of information and making learning as active as possible. My teaching methodology aims to develop a deep understanding and passion for the subject, while at the same time including notion learning in my lesson plan. I have completed my Leaving Certificate in Our Lady's Bower Secondary School, Athlone, sitting seven exams at higher level and achieving a final grade of 591/625. I am currently a first year student in Maynooth University and I am completing a Bachelor of Arts in French and English. My lessons are typically one hour long and are available to all secondary school students. I believe the best way to help each student is by beginning tutoring sessions with a recap of the previous lesson, to get an idea of the pupil's level of understanding. My teaching plan depends heavily on the feedback I receive from students, as I am aware that every one of them learns in a different manner and at a different pace, so I aim to adapt my methodology based on their response.
