About Gilles
I am an astrophysicist with 16 years of academic experience in different environments. I completed all my education in France. I moved to Canada in 2010 for a post-doctoral position at the University of Manitoba, and found myself adopting this new country. I also spent a few years working in Japan, before returning to Winnipeg in 2020.
I taught courses in astrophysics, physics, mathematics, and various engineering fields, for both undergraduate and graduate students. Over my career I served as a teaching assistant and as a contract assistant professor in France, and as a sessional instructor in Canada. I also did private tutoring. And I have been regularly participating in a range of public outreach endeavours on and off campus.

As a professional astronomer, I can not only teach astronomy, but also use its broad span as a gateway to physical phenomena and concepts.
Beyond the accumulation of facts or laws, I think a key value of a good scientific training is the ability to think logically and critically, so that students be able to address new problems presented to them. I try to focus on general principles, then I put more emphasis on problem-solving skills. I like to question the students about the material, as opposed to delivering ready-made answers. I want my science students to become comfortable with the language of mathematics, while making every effort to present equations in a sensible way.
I have taught to a variety of students with different backgrounds and goals, from high-school to university levels. Adult learners and non-science students are welcome too.
