In my over 20 years of teaching, from the college setting to a maximum security prison to an academically elite independent school, I have always believed that the student’s voice and experience need to be at the center of instruction. What I love most about being a teacher is that I can always be a student, learning as much from my students as they learn from me. It's my goal that in my classes students are given room to go wrong, to digress, to stumble about in the dark until they find their way while we keep it light and try to laugh along the way. Whether we are doing writing workshops, critical reading of a classic novel, or some combination of both, we will have fun. We learn best when we play and I always bring playfulness to a lesson.
