About David
I'm a poet and songwriter, and I'm the father of three amazing kids--they inspire me, as my students do. What comes first? Being a dad, of course. But after that, we work together to collaborate and make extraordinary things together.

My students routinely describe me as the teacher who helped to set them free to be the writer and artist that they hoped to be. So many people feel afraid of judgment, afraid of not being "good", that they don't really open their mouths to sing their song. I teach them to do that, to be fearless, and to question anyone who believes they have the authority to keep them down.
I've taught at some of the most prestigious graduate programs in the country, and I've taught at modest schools, with many first-generation college students. In my experience, it's much the same no matter what: I expect my students to take themselves seriously and to work hard. If they do those two things, I promise to make them better and more confident and successful writers.
As the former poetry editor of Ploughshares (one of the most important literary magazines of this century) and as a professor and mentor, and as the person who created WAMFEST: The Words and Music Festival, where I put together Bruce Springsteen and US Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky for a conversation and performance, along with dozens of other extraordinary pairings of songwriters and poets, I'm uniquely qualified to support you as a writer and to open up new horizons for you, whether you're just starting , just starting over, or just trying to figure out how your vision fits into the larger world of the arts.
