About Patrick

Greetings! I'm a professor (PhD), writer (published), artist (BFA valedictorian), and (I hope) good human being currently living in Ottawa, Canada. Throughout my 18+ years of experience as an educator (currently teaching graduate courses in education, including teaching teachers to be better teachers), I have always been motivated by my students' success -- not only as students but also how they are able to achieve their own goals. I actually began my post-secondary teaching career as a tutor: first a peer tutor, then a Writing and Learning Consultant with a focus on one-on-one teaching and specializing in academic communication skills. I find it personally rewarding to see my teaching having a positive impact on a student's journey and development. With me, you're getting the best of both worlds -- someone who is both highly skilled and knowledgeable but also kind, patient, and caring. My priority will always be your needs, understanding, and encouraging your own confidence in your work and studies. I always hope that I will further inspire you to achieve the best outcomes and so get the most out of your academic work towards the brightest future.

One of my areas of expertise is in curriculum, evaluation, and leadership. My teaching approach is grounded in a feedback-focused ethic of care for my students, meaning that I provide detailed, personalized feedback for each student based on their current needs and aspirations. I strive to amplify strengths while giving support in addressing any weaknesses that might interfere with a student's development and expression of their ideas.

A typical session with me would start with identifying, in conversation with you as a student, your priorities and so what you most want out of our work together. This may include establishing an understanding of the assignment or academic writing task or particular skill you are concerned about. I then typically move into my own assessment of the task at hand in relation your stated goals, your learning and writing context (including discipline/subject/topic), and what you can show me as your current response to either a specific task or similar tasks in which you demonstrate the skill(s) you wish to improve or expand on. We would then explore deepening both your understanding of such a task and practical repertoires in addressing them in writing, speaking, and more, depending on your needs. I will provide concrete examples and if needed language input to scaffold your learning and skills development.

I consider myself a unique professor/tutor because I will always offer what I can towards achieving not only the requirements of a task but also opportunities to exceed them towards excellence and growth as a learner and writer.

I can adjust my lessons for any level of the following:
- senior academic-focused high school writing, especially for those who want to prepare for the leap from high school education and first year university in which expectations of writing and academic work suddenly curve much higher;

- undergraduate writing in any discipline, from first to final years in capstone courses and/or honours thesis projects;
- Master's level writing in coursework, research methods and design, through to thesis writing;

- PhD level work across all requirements of a doctorate program, including coursework, comprehensive exams, proposals, ethics reviews, research design and education, and write-up through to final defense.

- professional contexts and needs/learners outside of academia but who want to improve their writing, research, or other communication skills (including CVs and cover letters) in advanced fields

I also offer highly practiced and qualified (TESL Canada) skills in supporting English Language Learners (ESL/ELL/EAP). I have taught in government programs for newcomers (Canada), academic bridging programs, and professional language development programs.

I am further open to helping students experiment and navigate the requirements of their coursework or independent research, whether that be coaching and soft skills, conference presentations and networking, getting published before graduation, supervisor-student relationships, or even more creative approaches to academic work (such as arts-based or other non-standard ways of working in the academy).

Ethics grounds me in all of my work, so I am also sensitive to the needs of students from diverse backgrounds and varying levels of ability.
