About Dillon

Massachusetts-raised saxophonist Dillon Zupp picked up the instrument at age nine. Along with his new rental horn, he was gifted CDs by Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins. Hearing their music early on inspired the young musician to develop a distinct melodic approach to improvising.

Dillon graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2024, where he studied with George Garzone, Godwin Louis, Terri Lyne Carrington and Linda May Han Oh. After moving to New York City later that year, he continued to seek out mentorship from master jazz musicians, studying privately with Charles McPherson and Bob Mover. Dillon has developed his own approach to saxophone and jazz education through a fusion of what he learned from his mentors over the years and the real-world experience he has gained as a professional musician on the NYC scene.

About the lesson

Through my years in the professional jazz scene both in Boston and NYC, I've had the opportunity to perform with, listen to and observe world-class musicians on a nightly basis. I’ve realized that what these outstanding players have in common is mastery of the fundamentals of their instrument. When you have a beautiful sound, an accurate time-feel and control throughout the range of the saxophone, it becomes an unrestrictive blank canvas for your artistry. In our lessons, we will work on developing your approach to saxophone sound production, time and technique. As my students advance (or if they already have a solid foundation), we will discover how mastery over these fundamentals allows us to improvise on our instruments with looseness and creativity. Other topics I enjoy working on with students are sight reading, ear training, memorizing repertoire and playing with live bands.
