About Jim
I have written for local, regional and national newspapers and magazines and am currently a part-time editor. As a career science writer, I am also comfortable with algebra, geometry and trigonometry, and am familiar with astronomy, geophysics and oceanography. My books include "Tigers of the Sea: Hawaii's Deadly Sharks," rated by Canadian researchers as the seventh best shark book of all time. I have taught writing at the university level, and have taught as a substitute in a number of subjects, including English, math and science, in middle schools and high schools.

In math, I often ask students to solve equations, but I prefer to give them real-world scenarios for which they have to come up with -- and then solve -- their own equations. In writing, I emphasize active voice over passive voice, avoiding when possible forms of the very "to be," narration over exposition, compelling presentation of evidence, the use of anecdotes when possible, and the use of literary devices (simile, metaphor, alliteration, assonance, consonance, personification, internal rhyme, etc.) when appropriate. Essays can be lively. They don't have to sound stodgy to carry weight.
