About Mark

This is an opportunity to fulfil an ambition that is the focus of my life for the next decade. I have spent my entire career living, working with and celebrating words. After graduating in English Studies from the University of Nottingham, I began working as a writer/director in theatre, initially writing and directing at the Leicester Haymarket - working with the studio and youth theatre team. I formed my own theatre company and garnered praise for my writing in the national press, before expanding my career to embrace creative work within advertising and creative agencies. For the last 25 years, I have worked as a writer and director in film, television and for stage. My feature film BLESSED (James Nesbitt, Natascha McElhone, Gary Lewis) was released theatrically and broadcast on the BBC. I have created drama and comedies and programmes of other genres for the BBC, Discovery Channel, History Channel and many others.
I have lived the life of a writer and a creator - who has immersed himself in literature and creative expression. And I have had to make words work in a broad spectrum of ways, engaging audiences through my screenwriting, writing for the stage, novel writing - and also, in person.
I am recognised as a powerful, persuasive and effective communicator - who has often had to present complex and challenging ideas to diverse and demanding audiences. Not least when I served as Strategic Director to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Every day I must deconstruct ideas and narratives - seeking out key insights in order to deliver compelling and inspirational insights.
I have spent more than 30 years actively working to inspire people. I have always been - and remain - committed to making a positive difference. There is no other goal I wish to pursue.

LITERATURE STUDENTS: I am a graduate in English Studies from the University of Nottingham and an international award-winning writer, experienced in a spectrum of literary forms. My life as a writer brings an extra dimension of insight to my teaching of A-Level literature. During a 60-minute lesson, I help students to go deeper and make connections between the work they are focused on and wider cultural touchpoints that enrich their learning and deliver enhanced outcomes. I inspire an awareness that literature is alive, relevant and important in ways that are informed by my daily experience as a writer of novels, screenplays and stage plays. I reveal insights and awareness that refresh a student's commitment to the subject. I will offer sensitive but meaningful critique and set goals and tasks that are enjoyable, challenging and ensure growth.

CREATIVE WRITING: For creative writers, I offer meaningful mentorship and guidance, informed by real and credited experience. My aim is not to contort or constrain your individual voice - but to maximise your potential and sense of self-belief. I will offer sensitive but meaningful critique and set goals and tasks that are enjoyable, challenging and ensure growth. My creative writing sessions of 60 minutes are aimed at writers of all ages and backgrounds.

Details

I believe that I offer a unique and informed perspective on literature and the vibrant connections between authors, periods and themes.
I also bring the insight of a working writer to the subject and, as someone who lives and works with words, language and narrative every day, I believe this brings an added energy and inspirational edge to the lessons I share.

For creative writers, I offer the experience of an award-winning writer who will help you to see your work and ambitions with fresh eyes and a more informed understanding of the pathways to effective and affecting writing.
