About Mariam
In social and behaviour change leadership positions, I have been able to be a frontline leader in improving health outcomes. I have done this extensively within Uganda and also internationally.
Internationally, since 2018, I have supported the development of social behaviour change resource documents, including the SBC indicator reference guide, strategic framework for malaria SBC, national malaria strategy documents and implementation of Zero Malaria Starts with Me approach. These tools have helped to standardize malaria SBC implementation within endemic countries. As a result of my role, I have twice been elected co-chair of the SBC working group of the RBM Partnership to End Malaria to represent needs of endemic countries. This has entailed delivering a series of keynote speeches making the case for increased funding for SBC activities.
At the country level, I have served as a technical advisor and SBC specialist in the development and standardization of SBC strategies, communication campaigns and development of education materials that have targeted diverse audiences of 40 million. In addition to my work toward malaria prevention.
I have been engaged in the implementation of community health projects, including bed nets distribution, indoor residual spraying, distribution of sanitary towels to adolescents, introduction of community income-generation projects, community dialogues for better health, engaging school children in sanitation and malaria prevention, meningitis vaccination campaigns, outreach to health workers and religious leaders among others. One of these local efforts involved community dialogues to promote action plans for the construction of latrines for elderly family members using local resources.
