About Matthew
Hi! I'm Matt, a full-time Software Engineer in London and a TEFL-certified English tutor. I spend my working days in meetings, codebases, and presentations alongside colleagues who are doing all of that in a second language, which is what drew me to teaching the professionals I now work with on here.
I love languages and the process of learning them. I've taught English in a classroom in Beijing, studied Mathematics at university, and spent a year placing software engineers into US tech roles before moving into engineering myself. Each of those experiences shapes how I teach, from breaking language down logically, to understanding what interviewers actually listen for, to knowing first-hand what it feels like to work in a demanding technical environment.
Outside of work you'll find me reading, running, lifting weights, or picking up something new. I genuinely believe that being a good learner makes you a better teacher, and it's the thing that keeps me honest in every lesson.

My approach is built on structure and specific feedback, not generic "let's just chat" lessons. Every session has a clear objective, a focused activity, and a discussion that stretches fluency under realistic conditions. I give feedback in the moment: I name what I heard, model the sharper version, contrast the two, and you try it again. My Mathematics degree shapes how I break language down into clear, logical steps, so you always know where you are and where you're heading next.
Lessons are 50 minutes by default, with 25-minute options available for focused practice or check-ins between longer sessions.
I'm TEFL-certified with on-site classroom teaching experience at a school in Beijing. Before becoming a full-time Software Engineer, I spent a year as a recruitment consultant placing software engineers into US tech roles, which shapes how I approach interview prep.
Suited to adult learners at B1 (intermediate) and above. I specialise in Business English, workplace communication, and interview preparation for Software Engineers, Data Scientists, and other tech and business professionals.
