About Evan

Here’s my cliché ethos appeal: After working for seven years as a teacher and Curriculum Leader of a sixth-form English program in the United Kingdom, I returned home to escape the horrors of Brexit and embrace the horrors America has to offer. The program I led regularly achieved results among the best in England, and I have brought that same level of success to my students in Florida, where I teach AS and A-Level English Language at a selective attractor program. I take on a small number of private students each year. I also have prior examiner experience, having marked GCE and GCSE English Language papers for the Welsh Joint Education Council. Prior to working in the UK and Florida, I was a consulting teacher for the Abu Dhabi Education Council, where I taught advanced courses, developed curricula, and was once chased by wild dogs. I have undergraduate degrees in English Language and Arabic Language, and an MA in Linguistics/Arabic Language that is directly relevant to Paper 4. My results are always well above the international average, including several years of 100% pass rates at A-Level. I understand what you actually need -especially with analytical commentary work. I won’t bombard you with 7000 Greek terminology items or teach you to make pointless comments about plosives or sentence length.

About the lesson

You won’t learn anything by me talking at you for an hour. My lessons are differentiated to your needs and structured around me briefly modelling techniques, your practicing, and me providing feedback as you go – not in the discouraging way my French wife corrects my pronunciation when I make the effort to speak her first language, but in a more actionable, intentional way. While I will use actual exam texts, my lessons are not death by past papers; I have written my own resources and stolen (with permission) those of my talented British colleagues. Having taught AS and A-Level for thirteen years, I spot and address misconceptions quickly; expect me to adapt lessons in response to what you’re doing. A “lesson” to me includes responding to emails and providing feedback and support outside of structured times. Mostly – and this is key – I believe that feedback is a two-way street. If something I’m trying isn’t working, we’ll collaborate on the solution. The only ego I have is based on my students’ exam results. I take them as personally as you do.

Perfect! Evan is absolutely the best tutor my son could have asked for ‘y son did not pass the AICE english exam and had a short time to prepare for the retake. Evan develop great rapport with my son, was able to develop personalized curriculum, and readily available to support him through hands on practice. My son stated he learned more from him in a month than he did the entire school year and my son was able to pass his exam. Grateful to Evan and all the time he invested in helping my son succeed.

Indeed, Mr. Szymanski is an excellent instructor with an unmatched love for language. I've never met a more passionate teacher than him. Mr. Szymanski excels at teaching his students the content they need to know; by providing them with interesting topics to ignite a love for the study of the English language. Mr. Szymanski is incredibly knowledgeable in his field: able to explain even the most niche linguist and their applications off the top of his head. More importantly, however, Mr. Szymanski genuinely cares for his students and wants them not just to pass, but to learn as well. He managed to take my years-long hatred of English Language Arts and change it into a passionate hobby. To this day, I think of his class when I hear some new slang term developing. Indeed, Mr. Szymanski is one of the best and most memorable teacher's I've ever had, and any student would be lucky to have him.
