About Olivia

(ENGLISH LANGUAGE (ESL) LESSONS FOR ADULTS AND YOUNG LEARNERS)
I am a CELTA-qualified English teacher who trained at International House London. I can work with adults and young learners of all levels aged 12+. I offer lessons in speaking, reading, writing, and listening, and have access to a wide range of resources desgined for A1-C2 level learners. As a born-and-raised Londoner, I am also very happy to assist with native pronunciation. As well as offering general English lessons covering all four skills, I am also happy to help with specific goals, such as improving conversation skills, improving specific areas of grammar, or helping you to write professional letters and emails. I can also help with exam preparation (e.g., IELTS).

(TUITION FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL PUPILS)
I am a University of Edinburgh graduate (Classics MA, 2:1). I have an excellent academic record, with A*AA at A level (in English Literature, Latin, and Greek), A in AS level Philosophy and Ethics, and 10 A*s at GCSE. I can teach students from year 7 to year 13.

As well as being familiar with a wide variety of ancient Greek and Roman texts, my particular interest within Classics is medieval manuscripts and codicology. I also have strong Latin and Greek language skills. As for English, I am an avid reader who particularly enjoys 19th century English and 20th century American literature. I will gladly and thoroughly read or re-read any novels/plays/poems that my students have been assigned so that I can help to the best of my ability. I am really keen to communicate and share my passions while staying on track to deliver focused and goal-oriented tuition.

My other interests include Archaeology and Italian, both of which I took as elective subjects alongside Latin and Greek at university. In my free time I enjoy mountaineering and rock climbing.

As I have only recently finished my studies, my memories of being a student are very fresh, enabling me to put myself in my students’ shoes and understand what they are facing. For example, one frustration I remember having with my own teachers was that when I was struggling to understand something, it was difficult to get them to 'rewind' far back enough in their own knowledge and understanding to meet me at my level so I could progress. It was as if they were too far-removed from their own initial learning process to recall the steps that went into it.

I am extremely passionate about my subjects, while also understanding that studying them can be difficult and draining. I can empathise with the love-hate relationships that many students develop with their subjects. I want to help each student achieve their full potential.

(ENGLISH LANGUAGE (ESL) LESSONS FOR ADULTS AND YOUNG LEARNERS)
Please let me know what your goals are (e.g., exam preparation, improving speaking skills etc.) before our first lesson so I can prepare appropriate materials.

I can work within a variety of CELTA-standard lesson frameworks, and am able to adapt to individual students' needs. I understand that everyone learns in different ways, and the benefit of booking 1-1 lessons is that I can design lessons just for you! I am willing to spend my free time planning your lessons to ensure that you get as much as possible out of them.

(TUITION FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL PUPILS)
I understand that everyone learns and studies differently. Therefore, I tailor my lessons to my students’ learning styles, personalities, and goals.

I have strong interpersonal skills and am a good communicator, so I can easily get to know my students’ individual needs and meet them where they’re at. Therefore, my lessons may take different forms depending on to whom I’m delivering them. I can cater to students whether they learn best from reading, talking, drawing pictures and diagrams, writing notes, flash cards, colour coding etc. I can also assist with writing concise and memorable revision notes or topic outlines for exam preparation.

It is helpful to have an initial consultation to establish what the student or parent wants out of the tuition so I can make shorter-term plans for upcoming lessons as well as a more general long-term plan.

I am willing to devote lots of my free time not just to lesson planning and marking, but also to reading up on my students’ set texts and mark schemes etc., so that I have as thorough an understanding as possible of what they are working on.

I can also provide empathetic and adaptive tuition to students with learning difficulties. I myself have ADHD, but wasn’t diagnosed until adulthood, so I know from first-hand experience how difficult it can be to get through your studies without adequate support and adjustments.
