About Alyson
I'm a full-time elementary reading specialist with hands-on classroom experience across core subjects. My tutoring style is patient and confidence-first — I meet kids where they are, align sessions with what they're learning in school, and keep parents in the loop with clear updates. My goal: every child leaves feeling more capable than when they started.

I believe young learners do their best work when they feel safe making mistakes. My approach centers on building confidence before pushing pace — I meet each child at their current level, celebrate small wins loudly, and never let frustration build unchecked. Key techniques I use:
Scaffolded learning: breaking tasks into small, achievable steps so success comes early and often
Multi-sensory instruction: mixing visuals, hands-on manipulatives, and verbal explanation since elementary kids learn differently
Positive reinforcement: specific praise ("I love how you sounded that word out!") rather than vague encouragement
Frequent check-ins: short, low-pressure questions throughout to catch confusion before it snowballs
Errorless practice early on: starting with high-success-rate problems, then gradually increasing difficulty
A Typical Lesson Plan (45–60 min)
Warm-up (5 min) — a quick review game or fun question to ease in and build comfort
Check-in (5 min) — ask what felt hard in school this week; adjust the plan if needed
Core skill focus (20 min) — new or reinforced concept, taught in small chunks with guided practice
Independent practice (10–15 min) — student works through problems solo while I observe and offer light support
Wrap-up & win (5–10 min) — recap what went well, assign light practice, end on something they got right
I have a teacher's-eye view of how school curricula are actually structured, so I reinforce what's happening in the classroom rather than teaching in a vacuum.
I focus as much on confidence and attitude toward learning as on the academic skill itself.
Who These Lessons Are For
Elementary students (roughly K–5)
All core subjects: reading/phonics, writing, math foundations, and basic science/social studies
Especially well-suited for kids who are anxious about a subject, falling behind grade level, or need extra reinforcement of classroom material
Also great for kids who just need a steady, encouraging adult to help build good study habits early
