About Amanda
As a dual certified teacher and speech language pathologist I pride myself in providing an empathetic, compassionate, and enthusiastic approach to helping every student significantly improve their reading skills and every student a voice in the classroom. I have 20 years of experience in teaching reading. I ove reading and I strive to inspire every student I work with to enjoy reading as well! I started my journey to teaching reading with a BA in elementary and special education from Providence College. In that process, I realized a passion to give every student access to and confidence in communication. This began with a masters degree from NYU in Communication Sciences and Disorders. From that point forward I have been dual certified as an teacher and a speech language pathologist. This helps me to get to the route of any reading or oral language problem. I have guided my students to significant success (1-3 years of grade level progress), whether it is based in breaking words into sounds to help them read or using sounds to make words to help them spell. I am trained in Orton Gillingham, LETRS, Wilson Reading, and UFLI reading approaches. I have also helped students to achieve that same level of progress with their oral language comprehension or reading comprehension, including vocabulary, sentence comprehension, and/or comprehension of informational text or literature. Bring on the challenge- I will guide your student to reading success with compassion, empathy, and expertise!

I am extremely passionate, dedicated, and enthusiastic about developing literacy skills in learners of all ages. I am trained in teaching approaches that are recommended for general education students, students with reading and spelling weaknesses, and students with dyslexia and dysgraphia. My lessons are personalized to the students I work with, but in general follow this sequence for reading decoding and spelling lessons:
1.) Phonological Awareness Warm-up: Listen for sounds, manipulate sounds, identify sounds in words
2.) Review Previous Lesson: Re-reading familiar texts, phrases, word lists, or dictation of previously learned words and phrases
3.) Introduce New Concept: Explicit, direct teaching of a phonics skill or rule
4.) Guided Practice and Extended Practice with individual words and word lists: Blending words, reading pattern-based words, phoneme-grapheme mapping, word sorts (sound sort or spelling sort, word building with grapheme tiles, word chains, word families, cloze tasks, timed reading of learned words, read in phrases, choral reading
5.) Guided Practice and Extended Practice with Connected Text: Reading phrases and sentences, building reading fluency with paragraphs and passages
6.) Dictation Practice: Sounds, words, phrases, and sentences.
7.) Reading of Texts: Decodable sentences, decodable texts, highlight target words.
I follow this lesson sequence for reading comprehension:
1.) Build and elicit prior knowledge
2.) Set a Purpose for Reading
3.) Pre-Teach Vocabulary: pronounce, write, and read vocabulary, build student friendly definition, give examples and non-examples, ask yes/no questions help students to use the word
4.) Introduce the Text, Help Student to Make Predictions
5.) During Reading Text Dependent Questions to Encourage Active Processing of Text: Retell or summarize an important section, update or make a new prediction, answer inferential questions, analyze a challenging sentence or paragraph, check comprehension monitoring, discuss visualization
6.) Use Text structure: Graphic Organizers, guided notes/ sticky notes
7.) After Reading: Focus for repeated readings: Revisit vocabulary to look for multiple meanings, sort related words into categories, write student definitions, delineate synonyms and antonyms, semantic feature analysis, shades of meaning, comparative/ superlative adjectives, four squares, select and connect
8.) Students Show their Knowledge: Graphic organizers, writing, retell / summarize, answer questions, teach the teacher.

Knowledgeable tutor with great ideas
Amanda has had a significant impact on my daughter for the past several months that they have been working together. She really seems to understand and get to the core of the issue or "learning block" and has different ways to approach learning each concept. She is also very good at articulating her process to my wife and I. It also helps that my daughter looks forward to her sessions since Amanda is so nice and approachable.A Gem of Excellence: Kind, effective, insightful
