About Matthew
I am a recent university graduate with a B.S in Chemistry and a minor in mathematics who will be attending UCLA's chemistry doctoral program in the fall. I have worked extensively as a chemistry tutor for undergraduate coursework and have some experience with high school curriculum as well.

My approach to teaching centers around the tutor-student dynamic. My goal will always be to instill an understanding of the material at a foundational level. To do this I will bring a nearly preternatural enthusiasm for the topics and boundless patience for the students.
Topics in chemistry are extremely abstract and difficult to conceptualize. To expect students to understand them immediately is foolish and extremely harmful for the understanding of the student. Too often educators forget how difficult learning new skills can be. The resulting impatience with students who struggle, causes students to expect to fail, falsely believing that they are inherently bad at science. No one is a lost cause; struggle does not mean you are bad at something it means you are new to it. These topics are difficult to understand, I certainly struggled with them at first.
My role more than anything is to accept your struggle not as a failing, but as a result of the difficulty of the subject matter. You are not bad at chemistry you are simply unused to the terrain. We will go over topics for as long as necessary, exploring different perspectives, until the topic makes intuitive sense. We will focus on understanding over learning, on education over grades, and on proving both to yourself and the world at large that you are good at this. Because you can be, it will just take time.
