I hold degrees from the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology as well as the Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology undergraduate programs at the University of Colorado at Boulder. As wordy as that is, my skill set is simple - if it's a hard science that you need help with, I can help you from the elementary through the undergraduate level.
I also studied writing with an eye towards professional document development (cover letters, resumes, etc.) and creative writing assignments. I worked for a year and half as a writing tutor at CU Boulder's student writing center, editing papers for undergraduate and graduate students. I'm currently a contracted editor working regularly with high school students' college application essays - if you have a college app that needs looking through then look no further.
I've worked in the Portland Public and Reynolds school districts as a Special Education Assistant and an aftercare provider. I ran student intervention groups as well as 1-on-1 lessons for students ages 5-11.
My teaching strategy has its roots in the recursive/dialectic strategy for learning, wherein both teacher and student actively engage in discussion over subject matter to promote the generation of new ideas, the illumination of incomplete or incorrect foundational understandings, and to promote the confidence and creativity of the learner with respect to the subject at hand. This type of tutoring is not a quick-fix: it is a strategy that aims to improve the student's ability at the fundamental level.
