About Audrey

I received my bachelor's degree in Health Science and am pursuing Physician Assistant graduate school in the fall. My education pathway allowed me to get plenty of experience in resume building/writing. I have also always had a passion for writing in general even though it was not my specific major. I took several advanced college writing classes and thoroughly enjoyed them. I realized I loved to teach writing when I was helping my peers with their work as well.

I like to use approach teaching using differentiated instruction. This approach involves tailoring lessons to meet the diverse needs of students. It recognizes that students have varying levels of readiness, interests, and learning styles. Examples of this include offering multiple ways to engage with content (visual aids, audio resources, hands-on activities), and providing different levels of assignments or tasks based on students’ abilities and knowledge. The benefit of this approach is that it ensures all students can access the content at their level. It also increases engagement by addressing individual learning preferences. Example of a Typical Lesson Plan for Resume Preparation Objective: By the end of this lesson, participants will understand the components of a professional resume and be able to create, format, and tailor a resume to stand out to potential employers. Duration: 90 minutes (can be adjusted based on time available) Materials Needed: Computer with internet access (for participants) Projector/Screen (for presentation) Example resumes (printed or digital) Handouts with resume tips and sample templates Whiteboard and markers or a digital alternative (e.g., Google Docs) Resume template (optional) Outline & Activities 1. Introduction (10 minutes) Objective: Set the context for the workshop, engage participants, and outline goals. Activities: Brief self-introduction (instructor) and invite participants to introduce themselves. Share the importance of a well-crafted resume in securing job opportunities. Discuss what a resume is and its role in the job search process. Overview of the workshop’s structure. 2. Understanding Resume Basics (15 minutes) Objective: Familiarize participants with the key sections of a resume and their purpose. Activities: Presentation on resume components: Header/Contact Information: Name, phone number, email, LinkedIn (if applicable). Summary/Objective (Optional): Brief, tailored statement about the candidate’s skills and career goals. Experience: Work history, including job title, company, dates of employment, and accomplishments. Education: Degrees, certifications, and relevant coursework or training. Skills: Hard and soft skills relevant to the job. Additional Sections: Projects, volunteer work, publications, etc. Show a sample resume and go through each section in detail. 3. Resume Formatting and Layout (20 minutes) Objective: Teach participants how to structure their resume for clarity, professionalism, and impact. Activities: Presentation on best practices for resume formatting: Clean, simple design (e.g., using bullet points, headings). Use of professional fonts (e.g., Arial, Calibri). Optimal resume length (1 page for entry-level, 2 pages for more experienced professionals). Use of action verbs and concise language. Consistent formatting (dates, job titles, and company names aligned). Walkthrough of resume dos and don’ts (e.g., avoid overly decorative fonts, irrelevant personal information, or long paragraphs). Share a resume template (optional) that follows these principles, for participants to use during the session. 4. Tailoring Your Resume (15 minutes) Objective: Guide participants on how to customize their resumes for different job applications. Activities: Discuss how to analyze job descriptions and highlight relevant skills and experiences. Show how to use keywords from the job listing to optimize the resume for applicant tracking systems (ATS). Provide a real-life example: Show a job description and demonstrate how to tailor a resume based on the specific requirements. Encourage participants to think strategically about what experiences to emphasize, especially if they have limited work experience (e.g., internships, volunteer work, or academic achievements). 5. Hands-On Resume Writing (20 minutes) Objective: Allow participants to draft or revise their resumes using what they’ve learned. Activities: Instruct participants to open a document or use a resume template. Provide time for participants to start or revise their resume. Walk around to offer individual support. Encourage participants to use action verbs and quantify achievements (e.g., “Increased sales by 20% in 6 months”). For those who already have a resume, ask them to tailor it to a job listing of their choice. 6. Review and Feedback (10 minutes) Objective: Offer feedback to participants on their resumes. Activities: Invite volunteers to share their resume drafts with the group. Provide constructive feedback on each resume, highlighting strengths and areas for improvement. Allow other participants to offer suggestions or ask questions. 7. Q&A and Wrap-Up (10 minutes) Objective: Address any remaining questions and summarize key takeaways. Activities: Open the floor for questions and provide guidance on any unclear aspects of resume preparation. Share final tips for success (e.g., proofreading, using professional references, and regularly updating your resume). Encourage participants to ask for feedback on their resumes from trusted peers or mentors before submitting them. Follow-Up: Offer additional resources, such as links to resume-building tools (e.g., Canva, LinkedIn Resume Builder) and online courses. Schedule one-on-one follow-up sessions for participants who need more guidance. What sets me apart as a tutor is my focus on active listening and adaptability. I notice when a student is struggling and adjust my teaching style accordingly. I also strongly believe in building confidence in students by not only teaching them, but encouraging them and making them believe in their abilities. These lessons are for anyone who needs assistance or guidance for resume building or writing in general (ex. essay writing, creative writing, etc.) My classes are recommended for anyone enrolled in high school or college, as well as postgraduates.
