My teaching approach is Socratic, meaning I draw heavily on your hidden knowledge, eliciting that though careful guided questioning and dialogue. I further use a technique called "Devil's Advocate," wherein I take a position opposite to yours, uncovering your knowledge and passion for your subject while clarifying your own position. Clear thinking leads to clear writing no matter the subject. I am also very humorous and like nothing more than to take a tough subject or fears about your performance and turn them into something to make you smile and relax. After all, I firmly believe that there is no academic situation that can't be greatly improved by putting our two heads together and tackling problems head on!
I am a linguist, editor and writer with 25 years experience teaching mainly at the college level. I have taught hundreds of students in linguistics and ESL and professionally tutored a similar number in English literature, grammar, rhetoric and general essay writing. A specialty is preparing grad students for the challenge ahead and finally with the dissertation in my own and other fields. Further, I prepare resumes and covers for job seekers with a high success rate. A sample of my success is having taken a functionally illiterate student in a community college through to a graduate degree at Yale. So, I know what it takes!
There is a cancellation fee of 15 because I am a professional and I respect and value my time just as you do yours.

I, Linda Croson, have been Mary Ryan's immediate supervisor at the LaGuardia Community College Writing Center and friend for seven years and know and appreciate her as a human-centered and remarkably effective and engaging educator. Not only is Mary very knowledgeable and intelligent, she is also patient, kind, (her warmth is contagious), and sensitive to the individual needs and experiences of learners. Our students blossom with her thoughtful and personalized guidance and deep understanding of the learning and writing processes. Indeed, many students are unwilling to work with anyone but Mary and wait patiently for her next availability. Mary's integrity, responsibleness, and profound commitment to learners is incontrovertible and inspiring.
Mary was my beloved linguistic professor during my first years in college. She is one of the smartest persons I know and very knowledgeable. Mary is dedicated to seeing her students learning and thriving, and for that, she will walk the extra mile with you. I highly recommend Mary for any project you need help with.
