About Simon

I received my Ph.D. in English from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 2010. I’ve taught literature and writing for roughly the past decade at colleges and universities in the US, the UK, and Canada. My teaching has garnered accolades, including the University of British Columbia’s coveted Graduate Teaching Award for 2010.

Not only do I teach English and writing, but I also write... a lot. Maybe this is obvious, but if you’re looking for a tutor to help you with your writing, you want to find someone who’s publishing their own work.

In 2021, Wilfred Laurier University Press published my book, Prison Life Writing: Conversion and the Literary Roots of the U.S. Prison System. I’ve also published many academic articles in peer-reviewed journals like MELUS, American Studies, and Critical Survey. And one of my essays was awarded the 2018 Ernest Redekop prize for best essay of the year published in the University of Toronto Press’ Canadian Journal of American Studies.

In recent years, I’ve started to write for magazines and newspapers. I’ve published articles in Chatelaine Magazine, Xtra Magazine, The Breach, The Maple, and The Globe and Mail.

My lessons begin with an initial, free, 30-minute consultation. In the consultation, we’ll talk about your writing and what you hope to achieve in our future meetings. I want to know what will help you the most in the least amount of time.

Then, I’ll tailor my tutoring around your specific needs. Maybe you need help with...

• basic essay writing, which could include assistance with sentence-level issues (including grammar), paragraphing, or quoting;
• research tips and techniques so you can research better and faster;
• graduate-level writing, which could include help focusing your ideas or clarifying your writing for your dissertation, conference proposal, or prospectus;
• publishing your work in an academic journal, trade publication, magazine, or newspaper.

Over the years, I’ve coached a range of students, from high school graduates who want help with their grammar to PhD candidates struggling with writers’ block. Let me help you!

Alternatively, I’ve developed a general introduction to academic writing program that ensures success in any required first-year writing class. My introductory program uses cutting-edge techniques from the best books about academic writing. And it synthesizes key information from writing programs at colleges and universities where I’ve taught academic writing classes, like Douglas College, Langara College, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and the University of British Columbia (including WRDS, ASTU, and CAP courses).

My general introduction to academic writing program is roughly ten hours long, but it can be tailored to meet your needs and budget. If you’re an incoming college or university student, this is an especially helpful program to take over the summer!
