About John
I've been teaching all levels of remedial college English for the last fifteen years.
I have tutored high school and college students since grad school. I tutor individual students in all forms of remedial reading and writing.
I teach writing at every level with an emphasis on the recursive process, using a student’s own writing; highlighting progress and struggle in achieving a controlling idea, formulating a thesis statement, developing support through analysis, summary and evaluation, and constructing syntactically sound sentences that follow MLA style. I have taught Composition at every level at various Community Colleges.
I continue to develop and improve my knowledge of grammar, linguistics, and rhetorical writing modes by teaching the argumentative research paper. I use a wide range of readers and expository texts as well as works of creative writing and Literature.

My strength is articulating what the problem is and how it can be solved. The preferred method of demonstrating a mini-lesson is to take a chunk of text and then correct, crossing out misused words or awkward passages and replacing them with ones that work.
I use a four-step process to identify the difficulty in the writing, explain why it is a hindrance, show how to fix it, using the student text and then offering a task on which to concentrate for revision.
I encourage students to discover their thoughts and feelings by pr-ewriting and engaging in a series of mapping and writing strategies. I have various theatrical as well as conventional essay writing exercises, in addition to grammar and usage drills, designed to help students investigate their imaginations and hone their writing voices.
I would like to see the students embrace the idea that the paper is never finished, in terms of refining their thought. I’d like to think that the suggestions for revision are understood and incorporated into making the paper more coherent, if not more engaging in general.
