About Thorn
I'm a sophomore at San Jose City College studying biology with a focus on human physiology, with a minor in psychology. I have a general passion for most things science, but despite being in STEM, I am a very active reader! Dystopia and post-apocalypse are my favorite genres, but you would be hard-pressed to find a genre I didn't enjoy at all. I am also a musician and a digital illustrator!

I like to utilize a more collaborative approach to learning versus the strict teacher/student dynamic. Mutual trust is very important, as I aim to create a safe space for students to air out any comments or questions, and to make writing and reading less intimidating.
If the student is already part of a curriculum, I work off of their preexisting assignments, supplementing in extra resources when I think it would be beneficial, either to deepen understanding of the material or to build connections between the student and their work.
If they are not part of a curriculum, I format assignments in a similar manner to what they can expect in a classroom to help transfer what I teach to their classes, but the assignments may be altered to fit in better with the individual's learning style. I also collaborate with students to choose what they will be reading—from analyzing rap lyrics to discussing the history of dime novels about cowboys from the 1900s, I try my best to integrate the student's interests with the course material to make it, well, interesting!
As a twice-exceptional kid who was repeatedly told to "apply myself" more all throughout school, I understand the unique difficulties of students who may have emotional or learning differences. School can be a place with a lot of negative emotions associated, so it is very important to me to try and make a subject that not a lot of people enjoy into something students have personal interest and investment in beyond grades.
