About Lara

Hi! My name is Lara Radovic, and I'm a sophomore at Columbia University majoring in Psychology. I'm originally from Buffalo, New York, and currently split my time between Buffalo and New York City. I come from a Serbian-American family and am also a twin, which has given me plenty of experience with collaboration, communication, and learning alongside others.

Throughout high school, I was heavily involved in both academics and extracurricular activities. At Nichols School, I served as Head of the Tutoring Program and President of the Art Club, and I was an active member of the Mock Trial team. One of my proudest accomplishments was helping our team place third in New York State. These experiences taught me the importance of leadership, mentorship, and making learning accessible and engaging for others.

At Columbia, I continue to pursue my interests both inside and outside the classroom. I am involved with undergraduate art publications and the college radio station, where I enjoy exploring creative projects and connecting with people from a wide range of backgrounds.

Outside of school, I love music, film, literature, and comics. I believe these interests help me connect with students and bring curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm into my tutoring sessions.

My teaching style is highly personalized, student-led, and focused on developing long-term academic skills rather than short-term memorization. Every student learns differently, so I adapt my approach to their strengths, challenges, and goals. I strive to create a relaxed and supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and taking ownership of their learning.

What sets me apart is my emphasis on building strong study habits and critical thinking skills that students can continue using long after our sessions end. Rather than simply providing answers, I help students develop strategies for approaching unfamiliar problems independently.

For AP History and AP English courses, I focus heavily on exam-specific skills and writing techniques. For example, I walk students through a step-by-step process for planning and writing essays under timed conditions, then assign practice essays for homework and provide detailed feedback during the following session. My goal is to help students build a repeatable system they can confidently apply on test day.

For history courses, I often use narrative-based learning techniques that help students understand events as interconnected stories rather than isolated facts. I also use active recall methods, such as having students write down everything they can remember about a topic before reviewing what they missed, which helps identify knowledge gaps and strengthen retention.

For ESL students, I focus on grammar, reading comprehension, and analytical skills through close engagement with English-language texts. I have experience tutoring students ranging from middle school through high school, though the majority of my work has been with high school students preparing for AP courses and the SAT.
