I take a student-centered approach to instruction and prioritize discovering and understanding the students learning style, goals, and challenges. I am also passionate about facilitating and empowering each student to come to knowledge and skills on their own - together, we will each have an active role in this learning process. I blend this student-centered approach with a demonstrative component in order to introduce students to new concepts, knowledge, and skills that they need to know to find success in their various subject of study. I am committed to the holistic growth of each individual student and will teach, coach and guide them toward their goals with intention and passion.
I have been an academic tutor for elementary, middle, high school, and community college students for the past five years and love coming along students of all learning styles and backgrounds! I have also substitute taught at the elementary, middle, and high school levels and have worked on staff at Santa Barbara City College (#1 Community College in the Nation by CollegeChoice.net) as a communications tutor. I have specifically loved working with ESL (English as a second language) students as they seek to improve their english and understand various assignments with clarity so that they are set up to succeed.
I have taught 60+ students in subjects such as Public Speaking, General Communication Studies, Mass Media Communications, Organizational Communications, English Literature, US History, European History, Government and Policy, as well as Algebra I and II. I consider myself the Swiss army knife of tutors!
Additionally, I have experience in aiding students with college application essays as well as SAT preparation. Finally, I have aided and guided many near-collegiate graduates with constructing and tailoring their resume and cover letters as they apply for their dream jobs.
I am motivated to work hard as your tutor because I as a college educated woman who is the byproduct of committed educators, coaches, and advocates, I am conscious of both the academic challenges faced by the modern day student, as well as the development and success that these students have the potential to experience when authentic, intentional, and dynamic advocates commit to them.
I am seeking to come alongside you as a tutor because I desire the opportunity to implement my breadth of experience as an advocate, innovator, and an organizational developerâin global and local contextsâand to apply my communication skills in order to advise, counsel, and motivate students to academic and occupational success.
I tackled the college application process with fervor and applied for 15 schools - 14 of which I was admitted into. I decided to go to a private Liberal Arts Christian College to study communications and play college soccer. I received my Bachelors in Communications from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California - and was selected to write and deliver a speech at our 2015 commencement ceremony.
Since graduating, I have implemented my breadth of communication skills in a variety of positions. In the various positions I have upheld, I enthusiastically advocated for and supported the development of a diverse collective of individuals, through counsel, mentorship, and education. In my experience as a Communications tutor at Santa Barbara City College I engaged students on their road to graduation and transferring through individualized and strategic goal setting, progress evaluation, accountability, and educational facilitation. Many of my students were ESL adults who had recently immigrated to the U.S. and were in need of extra academic and interpersonal support due to language barriers and financial obstacles â I approached each of these students with great care and understanding, enthusiasm, and strategy. Additionally, as a Youth Director, I developed, supported, and united a student leadership team in reaching personal and group goals â through individual meetings, public speaking assignments, team building exercises, and group service trips.
In my experience with Youth with a Mission, I took initiative to fundraise $17,000 in my local community as a means to study and serve in a multicultural missions training program that culminated in training and supporting pastors and church leaders in the context of Nepal. As an innovator, I creatively envisioned a solution to fundraising obstacles of international missionaries by co-creating a fundraising platform - âRUN IT for the Nationsâ - a 5k run that spoke to the heart of our mission, and enticed individuals to support our vision through charitable giving. These endeavors display my fervor for âdreaming bigâ as a means to serve and enhance the world around me through innovation and problem solving.
As an intern at Red Rocks Church, I facilitated the internal and external communication and execution of programs through team collaboration, volunteer delegation, and content creation. Specifically, I spearheaded our departmentâs response to the COVID crisis by envisioning and establishing new modes of community outreach and engagement to 3,000+ Instagram followers and 5,000+ newsletter subscribers. Furthermore, as a Sports Information Assistant, I coordinated with 35 local media outlets by writing mass media materials including press releases for publication. The type of work in which I engaged in these spheres is reflective of my ability to develop and implement intentional and engaging external communication strategies.
Having worked extensively within individual and community devoted organizations for the past five years, I believe that I am uniquely qualified to thrive as a dynamic and effective tutor within a range of subjects.
I am looking forward to working together,
Kaci N. Mexico
