About Mikaela

My name is Mikaela George and I am a freshman at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. I am currently pursuing a dual-degree in Economics and Vocal Performance, though one of my greatest passions has always been writing. In high school, I was a straight A English Student, having scored 5s on both the AP English Language and English Literature exams, and scoring in the 99th percentile for English on the SAT. I spent two years working at an antiquarian bookstore, where I truly solidified my love of reading and writing, and cultivated a passion for instilling that enjoyment in others. I tutored my high school's Guided Path class in English among other subjects and frequently tutored students outside of school in essay-writing. I previously competed in essay-writing and poetry writing competitions yearly, and while I longer compete, I still write frequently in my free time.

About the lesson

My English teaching methods all stem from my belief that one does not need to be "born" a good writer. Writing is a skill that is learned, not given! My goal as a tutor is to instill in you a confidence in your own writing. During my lessons, I will often ask you to email me a piece of your writing that I can read ahead of time. Then, during our meeting, I can provide tips and tricks to improve your writing, then go through these tricks with you in real time. The details of the lesson plans will vary depending on what type of essay-writing you're attempting to improve at: college application-writing, AP essay-prep, or English class-assigned essays. However, my policy for all types of essay-writing is that lessons are judgement-free! My goal is to help you learn, at your own pace and in whichever way works best for you as a student. My lessons are generally geared towards high school students, but I frequently take on middle school students as well.
