About Emily

My name is Emily, and I'm a current law student at the University of South Carolina. I graduated from Washington and Lee University in 2022 with a bachelor's degree in American Politics. I am an award-winning writer and have experience teaching individuals of all ages and levels how to improve their writing--whether that be academic, creative, or professional.

About the lesson

Hi! My name is Emily, and I'm a law student at the University of South Carolina. I am an experienced writing tutor who has worked with students personally as well as virtually on Tutor.com. I believe that there are few skills more fundamental to success than the ability to write, and with time and hard work, you can learn how to write clearly and differentiate yourself from your peers. The key to improving your writing, and the central tenet to my teaching philosophy, is by learning by doing. I approach this in several ways: First, I will review your work and provide general comments on the content of your essay (or professional document, short story, admissions essay, etc.). Then, we will dive into the nitty-gritty of your writing. We will go through sentence-by-sentence, and I will point out the things you've done well in addition to the things that can be improved upon. Specifically, I will show you how else you may word a sentence to make it more compelling or ways to vary your sentence structure. We will then practice implementing those different approaches to writing in the rest of your essay and in your future work, as well. In my experience, the best way to learn something is to observe someone else and then take those tools and that approach and implement it in your own work. I am happy to simply review your work for grammar and clarity and provide comments in a one-time session, and that review can last as long as we need it to in order to be thorough. I am also happy to work with you on a long-term basis--this can include brainstorming ideas, outlining, first (or second or third) drafts, and final revisions to ensure that your work is as polished as possible. I want to work with you and teach you not just the mechanics--grammar, for instance--but how to approach an essay and how to string words together in the most compelling and articulate way.
