About Abby

Growing up, I worked as a classroom volunteer and found a passion for teaching and helping students. I have always loved the challenges that come with academia and the joys that come with literature. I have the utmost confidence that we can work together to learn to not only understand reading and writing skills but to be excited about them.

About the lesson

My tutoring approach is hands-on, supportive, and built to help students grow confidently and independently.
I open a typical lesson plan with an anticipatory activity to ease students into each lesson. For example, if we were to be working on reading comprehension I would open with reading a part of a fun book to help get our brains turning together.
I follow the “I do, we do, you do” model, first modeling skills, then practicing together, and finally guiding students to succeed on their own. Each of our sessions will end with an exit ticket, this is a tool I use as a check-in at the end of a lesson. It can be a simple thumbs up/thumbs down or an open discussion about how we're feeling.
I specialize in reading comprehension, symbolism, and teaching struggling readers and writers in grades 1–5.
