About Layla

I am currently studying a Bachelor of Science at the University of Tasmania, majoring in Zoology, and have a strong academic background in science and written communication. Throughout high school, I was naturally drawn to the world of literature and its ability to articulate meaning through writing. As a tutor, I aim to create a supportive and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and building confidence in their own abilities.

My approach focuses on genuine understanding rather than memorization. I help students break down difficult concepts, recognize connections between topics and apply their knowledge to assessment and exam-style questions. I also encourage effective study habits and independent problem-solving so that students develop skills they can continue using beyond our sessions.

I am patient, organized and adaptable, and I tailor my explanations and teaching methods to suit each student's needs. My goal is for students to leave tutoring not only understanding the content better, but feeling more capable and confident in themselves as learners.

The central theme to my teaching approach is teaching students how to understand, connect and apply knowledge so that they gradually become more confident and independent learners. A genuine understanding of what they are learning, why it works, and how different concepts connect, extends their critical thinking capabilities beyond simply teaching them information to reproduce in an assessment.
As a tutor, I:

- Encourage students to ask “why?” because developing genuine curiosity about what they are learning is more effective for content digestion than simply knowing you need to learn it.

- Break difficult concepts into clear, manageable steps using discussion, questioning, examples and visual tools such as whiteboards.

- Help students make connections between topics rather than viewing them as separate 'loads' to remember, as this improves both understanding and long-term retention if the relationships between concepts can be understood.

- Introduce applying the knowledge learnt by asking students to brainstorm some potential exam-style and practical questions so students understand the purpose of the information, and how/when to use it.

- Encourage students to explain concepts in their own words to identify gaps and strengthen confidence.

- Teach how to create a realistic and effective study schedule

- Adapt teaching methods to each student’s individual needs and learning style as everyone's brains process information differently.

- Propose ways to romanticise studying; rather than viewing it as a chore, students will learn to view their material and every new connection they make in their brain as a nourishing reward, and eventually studying will become an activity they look forward to.

Typical sessions begin at 60 minutes, with extended 90-minute sessions available for students who would benefit from additional time. These sessions are suitable for grades 7-12 students, including external exam preparation for grades 11 and 12.
