About Carmen
Hi All... I am Carmen Cook. In my day-job, I'm a full-time literacy interventionist for grades 4-6 at the Newport City Elementary School, in Newport, Vermont. This is my 34th year of teaching in elementary education and my 12th year as an interventionist. Earlier teaching experiences have included second and third grades for about 20 years, with a shorter stint in 5th through 8th grades, summer services for K-6 students, and work as a migrant education teacher. I also taught online literacy courses for Concordia University Portland for 10 years and at Vermont State University for two semesters. I consider myself lucky that I love what I do, despite the challenges teaching can present. I can't imagine life without teaching!
I grew up in a northern Vermont town on the Canadian border, speaking French and English, where one side of the street is in Canada and the other the United States. My undergraduate studies took place at Lyndon State College, where I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education K-6, with a Reading Minor. I earned my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction, exclusively online through the University of Phoenix.
Outside of education, life is a busy and crazy place on my planet. I’m a mom to a brood of children ages 24, 26, and 35, two grand kiddos ages 1 and 3, as well as two highly intelligent mutts. I have one very big kid, who’s 62, who does all the cooking. I’m an avid, workout junkie, and reader. I believe that laughing every day should be a priority.
