About Kieran

I have been studying Latin for 16 years, and have a First-class BA (Hons) from Oxford University in Classics, and am currently doing a PhD/DPhil at Oxford in Classical Languages and Literature. This involves studying and teaching Latin to the highest level, and over the years I have gained a wide-ranging knowledge of the most famous authors of Latin literature. I also have a thorough understanding of the linguistics at work inside Latin, and the history of Latin from the earliest evidence through Classical to post-classical times, all of which makes the language easier to teach.
In addition, I have lots of experience with several other ancient languages, including Akkadian, Sumerian, and Hittite.
I am an experienced online tutor, teaching people of different ages and levels of previous experience, with great success and satisfaction!

About the lesson

I offer flexible, personalised teaching to students, with a friendly yet professional tone.
Lessons can take two forms. The first, for more advanced students, consists of reading texts in the original language, and practising translation, and understanding how the language works as found in genuine texts, a method commonly used in Oxford's own classes.
The second type is teaching the language and its grammar. If you take lessons with me to supplement an official course of study, I am happy to work with you through your assigned textbooks and set texts. This avoids confusion from introducing material in different orders, while allowing you to receive more one-on-one attention and ensuring you can ask whatever questions you need to understand each topic fully. You will also get more experience working through exercises with direct feedback on your progress. I also provide my own materials when necessary or beneficial, to plug gaps in other sources.
A typical lesson of this sort might begin with looking at exercises done for homework on the previous lesson’s topic, before tackling new material; I gladly supplement materials with my own tips, based on my experience learning the language. This can take as long as needed, as I encourage students to ask as many questions as needed, so you never feel rushed. Lessons then conclude with a more guided set of exercises on the new material, before arranging homework.
